Mary Hawthorne- Professional Background

she/her/hers

Before beginning my path to becoming a therapist I served in the United States Army for eight years and deployed once to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the time I was in the Army, I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Columbia College. After leaving the service, I completed my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy through Antioch University. I completed the certification in Play Therapy at Antioch University, and I am working toward my Registered Play Therapy (RPT). I am also a Certified AutPlay® Provider.

I am currently licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA). I have three years of experience working in an inpatient behavioral hospital with adults as a mental health specialist. I also have experience working in community mental with children, adolescents, and adults.

Specialization and Focus

I work with all ages; my passion is working to build and strengthen the bond between children and parents by using child-parent relationship therapy. Being a veteran, I also have a passion for working with service members, veterans, and their families. I can help assist families in the reintegration process as a loved one is returning from deployment as well as help assist parents in co-parenting with one another as parenting styles may differ from one another.

Therapeutic Approach

I incorporate such theories as play therapy, and person-centered therapy to help build and strengthen the therapeutic alliance. During the intake session, we will go over the treatment goals as well as the different therapeutic approaches I will use while working with you and your family. When working with children under the age of thirteen I like to have parent sessions every four weeks to touch base and discuss the client’s overall goals as well as new challenges the child might be facing

Additionally, I use solution-focused, narrative therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy to join with the family and build an understanding of the client and the family’s goals in therapy.

When I’m not doing therapy…

I enjoy cooking and baking, spending time with my husband as well as my German Shepard, Zoey. I love living in Washington and exploring the great Pacific Northwest.
