Kathryn Hansen- Professional Background

she/her/hers

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who received a Master of Arts from Antioch University Seattle in 2017. I completed the Antioch University Play Therapy certificate program in 2017 and I fulfilled my training to become a Registered Play Therapist in 2023. I hold membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the Association for Play Therapy (APT).

I have worked in community mental health with children, adolescents, and adults from underserved populations. I consider myself an advocate for my clients’ mental health needs and I value collaborating with community supports to promote holistic healing. In the past, I have coordinated care with schools, the Department of Children and Family Services, WISe teams (Wraparound with Intensive Services), and medical professionals to ensure that my clients receive comprehensive support.

I believe that the therapeutic process should be one of empowerment. When I work with children
and adolescents, it is my privilege to help them discover the power of their voice so that they can
express their needs and learn to self-advocate. I recognize parents as providing the key to
positive change in their families and I strive to support them in the growth of their family
relationships. I believe that therapy provides a safe space in which you can honor the strength
within yourself and within your family as a way to heal and to make desired changes.

Specialization and Focus

Hoping to offer support from the very beginning, I provide perinatal mental health services. Additionally, my special interest is in using Play Therapy to build and strengthen relationships within families. I specialize in working with youth and young adults ages 3-21 and their parents, and I support clients who are managing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, life-adjustment issues, ADHD, social skills, behavioral challenges, and post-traumatic stress.

Therapeutic Approach

I believe that therapy is a time to work collaboratively as you undertake your journey of self-exploration. I use an integrative approach grounded in evidence-based practices, including Child- Centered Play Therapy, Child-Parent Relationship Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. I support adults working through past traumas by using Cognitive Processing Therapy. I value the power of the family unit, and I encourage caregiver involvement in a child’s healing process. I also want children and adolescents to have a safe place to process what is happening to them in their lives in a developmentally appropriate manner. As children exercise their natural ability to heal and grow, I strive to help them learn to see their best selves.

When I’m not doing therapy…

I enjoy going on adventures with my family. I also like hitting the trails for a hike and connecting with my dance community.
