Sequoia Troy- Professional Background
she/her
I’m a Marriage and Family Therapy graduate student at Northwestern University, working toward licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I’m passionate about supporting teens, young adults, and adults who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of who they’re becoming.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology and am an active member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). I stay current with evidence-based and relational approaches because I believe therapy should feel both supportive and effective.
Before entering graduate school, I spent five years working as a Behavioral Consultant using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). During that time, I supported children and families in building communication, emotional regulation, and social skills. This experience shaped how I understand patterns, nervous system responses, and the connection between behavior and emotion.
While I value that background, my current focus is working with teens, young adults, and adults. Many neurodivergent individuals grow up without the emotional support they need. I am especially passionate about helping older teens and adults better understand themselves, build self-confidence, and develop tools that feel authentic and sustainable.
Along the way, I saw how powerful it can be for someone to have one steady, nonjudgmental person in their corner. Many of my clients tell me they’ve spent years feeling misunderstood or like they have to “hold it all together.” My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to do that anymore.
Specialization and Focus
I support teens, young adults, and adults who feel anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves. Many of my clients are used to holding everything together on the outside while struggling on the inside. Therapy can be a place to slow down and feel understood.
School, work, and family expectations can feel heavy. High school and college students often come to me when they feel stuck, burned out, or unsure about their next steps. Together, we work on building clarity, confidence, and emotional balance.
I also enjoy working with neurodivergent teens and adults. Some people grew up masking or feeling misunderstood. In our work, we focus on self-acceptance, practical tools, and creating a life that feels more authentic.
Culture and identity also shape how we experience stress and relationships. I support BIPOC teens and adults who want a therapist who understands family dynamics, pressure, and multiple identities.
You do not have to have everything figured out before starting therapy. We can begin wherever you are.
Therapeutic Approach
My style is warm, collaborative, and real. I don’t rush the process or expect you to open up before you’re ready. We move at your pace. Together, we focus on understanding your patterns, building emotional awareness, and developing practical tools so you feel more grounded, confident, and in control of your life.
Therapy with me is a place to slow down, make sense of your experiences, and build a stronger relationship with yourself.
When I’m not doing therapy…
I love spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, and exploring creative pursuits. I recharge by surrounding myself with the people I care about and staying socially connected.
