Mary Hawthorne- Professional Background
she/her/hers
Before becoming a therapist, I served in the United States Army for eight years. I deployed once to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. During my service, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Columbia College.
After leaving the military, I completed my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Antioch University. I also completed a Play Therapy certification there. I’m a Certified AutPlay® Provider and am currently working toward my Registered Play Therapist (RPT) credential.
I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA). I worked in an inpatient behavioral hospital supporting adults as a mental health specialist. I also spent several years in community mental health working with children, teens, and adults. These experiences shape the way I show up for clients and families—calm, steady, and grounded.
Today, I work with children, teens, adults, couples, and parents. I support them through some of the most overwhelming seasons of life and family change. I’m especially drawn to people who are trying their best but still feel stuck. This often includes big emotions, early childhood challenges, relationship stress, and postpartum transitions.
Specialization and Focus
I work with children and teens who struggle with anxiety, emotional regulation, ADHD, sensory needs, and behavior that is often misunderstood.
I also support adults, couples, and moms, especially in the perinatal period. Many are navigating identity shifts, overwhelm, relationship changes, and the transition into early parenthood.
My goal is to help clients make sense of big feelings and tough patterns. I want them to feel more connected, clear, and steady.
Therapeutic Approach
I use play-based, relationship-focused therapy rooted in connection and safety. Kids and teens do not need to sit still to do meaningful work. Movement, imagination, and connection are part of the process.
With adults and couples, I bring that same relational lens. I focus on patterns, communication, and emotional safety in relationships.
I take a warm, collaborative approach. I help clients feel seen while offering tools that fit real life. My goal is to support both individuals and families so everyone feels more connected and supported.
When I’m Not Doing Therapy…
I’m usually with my family, enjoying the outdoors, or doing something creative. I love quiet moments, slow mornings, and anything that helps me reset after a full day supporting others.
